His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, yesterday presented prizes to the champion of the Butra HeidelbergCement (BHC) Brunei Championships ADT 2019 as well as donations to two charity organisations.

Also present were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Jefri Bolkiah, Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Abdul Hakeem in his capacity as Organising Chairman, Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Bahar, Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Haji Mohammed Al-Mokhtar bin Pengiran Lela Cheteria Sahibun Najabah Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Aziz and other members of the royal family.

In the final round of the BHC Brunei Championships ADT 2019 at The Empire Hotel & Country Club in Jerudong yesterday, Thailand’s star golfer Prom Meesawat showed his battling spirit by rallying with a birdie on the third playoff hole to defeat Japan’s Naoki Sekito and clinch the champion’s title.

Organising Committee Chairman Haji Mohd Junaidi bin Pehin Orang Kaya Digadong Seri Diraja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Abdul Rahman in his speech said hosting the prestigious Asian Development Tour (ADT) competition for the second time marks another milestone for golf’s development and sports tourism in Brunei, and has surely inspired Brunei’s very own young golfers to raise their standards.

His Royal Highness later presented the champion’s trophy to Thailand’s Prom Meesawat who also took home winnings of USD13,125 in the USD75,000 ADT event.

His Royal Highness also presented a mock cheque of BND5,500 each to two charity organisations – Pengiran Muda Mahkota Al-Muhtadee Billah Fund for Orphans (DANA) and Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam.

The monies were collected from a charity drive through the ‘Birdies for Charity’ programme at the start of the week, where a total of 947 birdies were recorded after four rounds and through the generous contributions of its donors, the programme received a total of BND11,000.

Receiving on behalf of DANA was its Chief Executive Officer Dato Paduka Eddie bin Dato Paduka Haji Sunny while Pusat Ehsan was represented by its Senior Trustee Dato Paduka Haji Mohammad Alimin bin Haji Abdul Wahab.

Some 144 golfers from across Europe, the United States of America, South America and Asia, including 10 local golfers, participated in the championships held for the second consecutive year at the Golf Course of The Empire Hotel & Country Club.

Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Abdul Hakeem was among the local participating golfers which included Faiz Damit, Pengiran Wirahadikusuma bin Pengiran Salleh, Zul Hilmi bin Haji Rosli, Awangku Muhd Syakir bin Pengiran Haji Ali, Mohammed Qawim Fakhri bin Haji Aslimon, Mohammed Qazzri Fakhri bin Haji Aslimon, Mohd Aritz Maldini bin Haji Abdul Majid and Lai Suan Loong.

Qawim Fakhri made his cut in the tournament and emerged in 43rd place with a final round score of 282.

Prom’s four-day total of 20-under-par 260 was enough for him to force his way into a play-off with Sekito, who stunned the field with an impressive 61 in regulation play.

Prom and Naoki went head-to-head on the first play-off hole held on 18 but both of them had to settle for pars after missing their birdie attempts. Sekito had an opportunity to win on the second extra hole but narrowly missed a 10-footer and settled for par with Prom.

The play-off was then moved to the ninth hole where Prom eventually triumphed after striking a solid approach to eight-feet and rolling a decisive putt in for birdie.

Naoki settled for second place after failing to make birdie from off the green.

In third place was Austen Truslow from the United States of America with a final score of 264 followed by Wang Wei-lun from Taiwan with 265 and Thailand’s Tawit Polthai with 266.
