Education is an important aspect of growth and progress in today’s world and what better way to stimulate it than to develop the interests of youth to engage in learning. For Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Secondary School, it was through basketball – a sport taken with great enthusiasm and dedication to the extent of becoming a learning resource and motivation for its students to excel academically.

Basketball has an enormous value for promoting health and in helping develop the hand and body co-ordination. It provides a healthy cardiovascular workout especially for growing youths and instills one of the best qualities in sports, teamwork. Multi-tasking is also natural in basketball and is an essential life skill in the 21st Century.

In came Butra HeidelbergCement, a strong supporter of the school’s cause, who encouraged them to pursue their ambition by sponsoring 20 tonnes of cement for the basketball court. This paved the way for more sponsors and supporters to join the cause and was a step closer to success.

November 15, 2014 marked the grand occasion for the school in not only commemorating the officiating of the basketball court but in celebrating their 20th anniversary as well. The key was handed over by the guest of honour, Acting Head Director of Education/Acting Director of Schools Haji Abdul Rahim bin Derus from the Ministry of Education, to Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Secondary School principal Hajah Monaliza binti Haji Abd Halim in a brief ceremony for the festive occasion.

Butra HeidelbergCement was one of the main sponsors for the school’s campaign along with Fitness Zone Health Club, Readymix Concrete (B) Sdn. Bhd, Maju Jaya Sdn Bhd, Aewon Garment and Embroidery, Syarikat Bapu & Anak-Anak, KFC, Bonix Contractor, Borneo Steel Mesh Factory, Swee Sdn. Bhd., Chatters ads Advertising Company, Setia Motors Sdn. We would like to thank everyone who has helped us to engage in this great experience – we have achieved our dream of building the basketball court but most important of all, we have had the chance to be part of a tremendous piece of teamwork to promote education in our school,” Gibbons said. “In the years to come, the names of our sponsors and the components of our educational journey will never be forgotten.”
