His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen officially launched the Butra HeidelbergCement (BHC) Brunei Championships 2019 at the Royal Berkshire Hall of the Royal Brunei Polo and Riding Club in Jerudong yesterday.

Also present were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Jefri Bolkiah, Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Abdul Hakeem, Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Bahar and other members of the royal family.

His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen was greeted on arrival by the championship Organising Chairman Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Abdul Hakeem.

Also present to greet His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen were Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin and Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohammad Isham bin Haji Jaafar, organisers and sponsors representatives.

After the welcoming remarks by the organising committee chairman Haji Mohd Junaidi bin Pehin Orang Kaya Digadong Seri Diraja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Abdul Rahman, His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen launched the championship before mingling with golfers and other guests.

Some 144 golfers from across Europe, United States of America, South America and Asia, including 10 local golfers will start competing today.

Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Abdul Hakeem is participating in the competition. Other local golfers include Faiz Damit, Pengiran Wirahadikusuma bin Pengiran Salleh, Zul Hilmi bin Haji Rosli, Awangku Muhd Syakir bin Pengiran Haji Ali, Mohammed Qawim Fakhri bin Haji Aslimon, Mohammed Qazzri Fakhri bin Haji Aslimon, Mohd Aritz Maldini bin Haji Abdul Majid and Lai Suan Loong.

Thai star Prom Meesawat, a two-time Asian Tour winner, is relishing his long-awaited return to the Sultanate following a 14-year hiatus for his first appearance in the USD75,000 Asian Development Tour (ADT) event. Prom will prove to be a tough opponent for the championship defending champion Kiradech Aphibarnrat.

The BHC Brunei Championships is held for the second consecutive year at the Golf Course of The Empire Hotel & Country Club from today until April 27. Members of the public are invited to support their favourite golfers.

The championship is supported by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism and Ministry of Home Affairs.
