THE Brunei Championship ADT Tournament from April 24-27 at The Empire Hotel & Country Club received a boost yesterday after Butra HeidelbergCement (BHC) Sdn Bhd became the title sponsor of the tournament in a signing ceremony.

Guest of honour Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin witnessed the ceremony.

This is the second time that Brunei Championship ADT Tournament is taking place following the success in last year’s edition.

Organised by SPS Innovative Enterprise and supported by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports with the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism, Ministry of Home Affairs, and Ministry of Health as well as members of private sector, The Brunei Championship ADT Tournament is expected to attract more than 120 top golfers in the region.

Managing Director of BHC Marcelino Ugarte said, “We are happy to be associated with the event sanctioned by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and supported by the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism. After the success of the inaugural edition, BHC is proud to continue its support for this’s year edition and build upon the achievements of last year.”

BHC, he said “has always supported the Public-Private Partnership programme ‘Building a Nation’. Under this programme, BHC contributed to the development of this nation through economic, environmental and social pillars. We believe the Brunei Championship is ideal for our aspiration as it will present this beautiful country to the golfing and travel enthusiasts around the world.”

Ten local golfers are expected to participate in this year’s event. They are Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Abdul Hakeem, Pengiran Saiful Hassanal Al-Haj bin Pengiran Putra Negara Pengiran Haji Omar, Faiz Damit, Lai Suan Loong, Zul Rosli, Wira Salleh, Awangku Muhd Syakir, Aritz Haji Majid, Qazzri Aslimon and Qawim Aslimon.

Kiradech Aphibarnrat who is currently number 40 in the world professional golf ranking won the previous ADT that was held at The Empire Hotel & Country Club in March last year. He is expected to defend his title again this year.

SPS Innovative Enterprise is the event promoter. Representative of SPS Innovative Enterprise Dato Paduka Haji Hamid bin Haji Jaafar expressed his gratitude to BHC Sdn Bhd for the continuous support to the tournament.

The objective of the event is to promote Brunei as a premium golf destination in the region and to encourage young Bruneians to take up the sport of golf.

The total prize money for the tournament is USD75,000.
